Have you ever wondered what makes a cold outreach resonate and stand out?
Two weeks ago, while hosting a 30-minute workshop with an SDR (Sales Development Representative) team, I was asked about the best cold outreach I've ever received.
It instantly reminded me of a message from Will Falkenborg.
Unlike most, his outreach wasn’t just a typical ask. It showcased research, passion, value, and results.
And yes, he wanted to be a guest on the SDR Game podcast.
And he did, you can listen to the episode here: YouTube, Spotify, or Apple Podcasts
Common (and less impactful) outreach messages I often receive:
“Our podcast episode would break LinkedIn.”
“I'm down to be a guest if you are ever in need of the next interview.”
Will’s message, on the other hand, stood out.
It scores 95 on Lavender’s email coach app:
Here's why it stands out:
Relevance: Directly aligning with the theme of the SDR Game podcast.
Research: Will pinpointed a gap in the podcast, highlighting the use of social selling and multi-threaded approaches by most SDRs. And not a recent episode about cold calling.
Clear Value Proposition: Will didn't just throw fluff; he stated how he could bring value.
Passion: Expressing a genuine love for cold calling.
Tangible Results: Providing measurable results like "Hit 403% of quota last month from cold calls" to prove credibility.
He offered a topic idea and used non-assumptive language.
For podcast hosts like myself, two pivotal aspects stand out:
Discovering guests who bring fresh perspectives and proven results.
Addressing subjects that resonate with our audience.
Now let’s break down the framework that Will uses, so you can use it:
How you can use this framework in your outreach:
Subject Line: Short, and neutral:
E.g., "SDR Game"Observation: Showcase that you’ve done your homework.
E.g., "I've noticed [a gap about the company or process]."Deliver Value Upfront: State how you can make a difference. E.g., "Our tool can enhance your [specific process]..."
Social Proof: Use data or examples. E.g., "We helped X company achieve Y results using our method."
Call to Action:
E.g., "Interested to explore this?"
Your Challenge:
Use this framework in your next outreach attempt. Monitor the responses you get, and tweak as necessary.
So, there we go. Thanks for reading.
That's all for this Sunday.
