I'm back! Took some time off and went to NYC to celebrate my wife's birthday.
2 weeks ago, I had the pleasure of having KD (Kevin Dorsey) on the podcast to talk about sales leadership.
I knew it was going to be great, and KD didn't disappoint.
So, I'll share my 3 biggest takeaways from this conversation with him:
Think about if you really want to be a leader
Encourage your team to be independent
Create simple and effective sales documents
For those interested in more detailed content, a more extensive version of this newsletter is available in both audio and video formats: The (First-Time) Sales Manager's Survival Guide with KD, on Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Podcasts.
My 3 key takeaways:
#1 - Check if leadership is right for you
Think about if you want to be a leader and if it fits your personal and career goals. Ask yourself if you are ready to take on more responsibilities and maybe earn less money than before. Being a leader means finding joy in your team's success, not just your own sales numbers.
Knowing if leadership is right for you helps ensure that you will be happy and effective in that role. Leaders need to be motivated by the success of their team, which is different from working as an individual salesperson.
#2 - Help your team to work independently
Step back from being too involved in every sale sales call or making cold calls. Focus on teaching your team how to handle sales calls and solve problems by themselves. This means less of you on calls and more of them taking the lead.
When your team learns to work independently, they develop confidence and skills to handle bigger challenges. This not only makes your team stronger but also frees you to focus on strategic planning and other leadership tasks.
#3 - Create simple and effective sales documents
Make your sales documents like checklists, process maps, and scripts short, clear, and useful. These tools should be easy for your team to use quickly during sales calls without getting distracted by too much information.
Having straightforward and easy-to-use documents helps your team stay consistent in their approach and improves their performance.
It also ensures that everyone knows exactly what to do, which can lead to better sales results and less confusion.
Hope you will learn as much as I did from this conversation with KD.
